Casino industry loses 2 in a row.

FRANKFORT, Ky.—After a long winning streak, casino operators have racked up back-to-back losses in their push to get slot machines, roulette wheels and blackjack tables into more states. The industry suffered a hit in Kentucky last week when Gov. Steve Beshear pronounced a casino initiative dead. That came only a week after Massachusetts lawmakers rejected a measure that would have allowed casinos to open there. Opponents contend the rejections, coupled with defeats two years ago in Ohio and Nebraska, signal a slowing of the spread of casinos after two decades of rapid expansion. "We've got states that are identified with three different regions of the country -- the South, Midwest and Northeast -- that are rejecting the casino agenda," said John-Mark Hack, a businessman who led the fight against casinos in Kentucky. "It's clear that a trend is emerging." After three months of debate, lawmakers in Kentucky declined even to vote on a proposal to open up to 12 casinos in the state. Physics teacher guilty of sex with student.

Stephen Peter Morrow, 55, from the Gold Coast, had pleaded not guilty on 11 counts of sexual penetration of a 16- or 17-year-old child under his care, supervision or authority. A Victorian County Court jury today found him guilty on nine of those counts after more than seven hours of deliberation. Morrow had told the jury he had sex with the girl only once - in a motel 2½ years after she finished school - and denied he had got her pregnant while she was in year 12. Police: Baby Born in Texas Middle School Bathroom Dies in Flush Attempt.

BAYTOWN, Texas — A 14-year-old Texas teenager on Wednesday gave birth in the bathroom of a middle school but the baby died when the mother allegedly tried to flush it, MyFOXHouston.com reports. Police said the student told counselors she had given birth and attempted to flush the baby inside a restroom at Cedar Bayou Jr. High School, the story says. Ex-stripper gets 99 years over murder plot.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A former stripper-turned-soccer mom was sentenced to 99 years in prison on Wednesday for plotting the 1996 killing of her former fiance. Mechele Linehan, 35, was convicted in October of first-degree murder in the 1996 shooting death of Kent Leppink. Leppink's body was found on a remote trail. Prosecutors said Linehan had Leppink killed for insurance money and was inspired by a 1994 movie, "The Last Seduction," in which a woman coaxes her lover into killing her husband for money. read more -msnbc.com

NEW YORK (AP) -- Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind man to reach the 29,035-foot summit of Mount Everest and climb the seven summits of the world, took on a different challenge in 2004: He guided six blind Tibetan teenagers toward the 23,000-foot summit of Lhakpa Ri, the peak next to Everest. Weihenmayer had received an e-mail from Sabriye Tenberken, a 2005 Nobel Peace Prize nominee and co-founder of Braille Without Borders, a school for the blind in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. The stepfather of Shannon Matthews, the nine-year-old girl who disappeared for almost a month, was charged last night with 10 offences of possessing indecent images of children. Craig Meehan, 22, a supermarket fishmonger, was arrested at Shannon’s home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, yesterday morning. He is expected to appear before Dewsbury Magistrates Court this morning. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A 22-year-old man has been charged with 10 specimen offences of possession of indecent images of children. “In relation to the welfare of the family’s children, it is being dealt with by social services. Police policy is we are not commenting on the welfare of the children.” The arrest is believed to have come after officers examined a number of computers which were seized during the search for Shannon. Grisly end for electrocuted power worker.

THE body of a power worker electrocuted while making repairs following strong winds dangled high above the ground for 90 minutes this afternoon. Victorian emergency workers had to wait for the local power authority to switch off the current at the scene in Mornington to allow the man's body to be retrieved. Police said initial investigations indicated the power company worker was electrocuted while making repairs to a power pole and line at Beleura Hill about 12:20pm (AEDT). A passer-by witnessed the incident and flagged down a police vehicle. The 38-year-old Somerville man's body was retrieved just before 2pm. A Country Fire Authority rescue crew used extender ladders to help get the man down from the power pole. Metropolitan Ambulance Service spokesman Paul Bentley said the man was pronounced dead after his body was retrieved from the powerlines. "We had to wait for the power company to switch off the power before a Country Fire Authority crew were able to retrieve his body," Mr Bentley said. ...read more news.com.au

Cops: Funeral Procession Escort Hit by Drunk Driver.

The funeral escort was hit by an SUV driven by a 20-year-old man, who was trying to pass the procession, according to police. The injured man was in critical condition Wednesday night, police said. They wouldn't identify the victim, and would provide any additional information about the 20-year-old, who is under investigation for drunken driving but has yet to be charged with a crime. The 51-year-old was at the end of the procession trying to catch up with the front of the procession to block the next intersection when the SUV driver tried to pass the line of cars on double yellow line roadway, police told FOXNews.com. Australian police: Man rescues wife from crocodile.

DARWIN, Australia (AP) -- A man rescued his wife from the jaws of a crocodile in remote northern Australia by jumping on its back, police said Thursday. The woman, 36, suffered leg and hand injuries in the attack late Wednesday in an Outback creek where the couple were swimming, Northern Territory Police spokesman David Wright said. But the 2.5-meter (8-foot) reptile released the woman and fled when the man jumped on its back. The man was not injured. "It was real Crocodile Dundee stuff," Wright said, referring to the 1986 movie featuring an Outback hunter who can kill crocodiles with a knife.
