New movies: ‘Drillbit Taylor,’ ‘Meet the Browns’.

‘Meet the Browns’?
Brenda Brown (Angela Bassett) is a single mom who does her best to raise her kids in the Chicago projects, despite financial hardships and the lure of crime, drugs. The Tyler Perry sticks to his formula of moralizing uplift, this movie is thoroughly entertaining, with great performances from Bassett and the supporting cast. Save it for a matinee.
“Drillbit Taylor”.
A trio of boys (Tony Gentile, Nate Hartley, David Dorfman) hires Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson) to protect them from a bully (Alex Frost). Could this be the end of Judd Apatow’s winning streak? This clunker has about as many laughs as the evening news. The script (co-written by Seth Rogen) doesn’t give Wilson much to do. Wait for cable.
“The Hammer”.
Adam Carolla (of this season’s “Dancing With the Stars”) stars in a story inspired by his own life about a former boxer who scrapes by as a carpenter and boxing coach at the local gym. Carolla adds charm and the film has a do-it-yourself feel that makes it pretty darn likeable. Nothing too special here, but it does have a sweetness to it. Wait for DVD. read more msnbc.com

Weather and travel chaos cause Easter misery .

Snow began falling in Scotland yesterday and was expected to move south over the next few days, with forecasters saying that a white Easter looked increasingly likely across much of the country. People wrapped up warmly to take a stroll along the seven-mile promenade in Bournemouth, Dorset, as temperatures dropped to 7C. Last Easter thousands of people sunbathed on the sandy beach as temperatures topped 20C. Holidaymaker Andy Hemmings, 55, from St Albans, Herts, said: "The sun is out but the winds are very chilly. We are warming ourselves up with a hot chocolate." read more - telegraph.co.uk

Saturn moon may have ocean of water .

PASADENA, Calif. - Scientists say they have found the best evidence yet that an ocean of liquid water may be hidden below the surface of Saturn's giant moon Titan. If the results are confirmed, it would be a starting point for further study into whether the ocean could be capable of supporting life. The latest evidence of an underground ocean is indirect and is based on analyzing radar images and Titan's spin rates from observations by the international Cassini spacecraft from 2004 to 2007. Scientists found several dunes, channels, lakes and other geological features on Titan's surface drifted from a fixed point, likely as a result of an increase of the moon's rotation. read more - yahoo.com

Flooding, Heavy Snow Plague Midwest.

Flood-weary residents in Missouri, Arkansas and Ohio fought to save their homes Friday after heavy rainstorms pushed swollen rivers out of their banks, and a fresh snowstorm blew through parts of the Upper Midwest, canceling flights and some Good Friday services. Along the Meramec River in eastern Missouri, residents of Valley Park hoped the town's $49 million earthen levee, built in 2005 to withstand a 100-year flood, would pass its first big test. The surging Meramec was expected to crest at a record 40 feet on Saturday — 24 feet above flood stage. read more -abcnews.go.com

Four cavers found alive .

(CNN) -- Rescuers found four spelunkers "wet and cold" but alive Friday afternoon in a cave in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a park spokesman said. Ken Cave said he was told it could take eight to 10 hours to free them from Rainbow Cave, which is entered at the base of a waterfall five miles west of Townsend, Tennessee, where one of the park entrances is located. He said he didn't know what had kept the four, who weren't identified, in the cave. "There are a lot of unanswered questions for us right now," Cave said. Members of the Knoxville Rescue Squad found the men after a 1½-hour trek through the cavern, Cave said. About 13 rescuers were involved. read more -cnn.com

Autopsy on tumor woman inconclusive.

PARIS, France (CNN) -- An autopsy conducted on a French woman who had suffered from disfiguring facial tumors and begged for the right to end her life has failed to conclude the cause of her death. A prosecutor in Dijon, eastern France, said Friday it was unclear whether Chantal Sebire died of natural or unnatural causes. He said the investigation would continue and more tests done, but results were not expected soon. Sebire, 52, was found dead Wednesday night in her home by the eldest of her three children, who are aged 29, 27 and 13. For nearly eight years, she had endured esthesioneuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer that spawned tumors in her nasal passages and sinuses, distorting her face and causing her nose and eyes to bulge. read more -cnn.com

Giant sea creatures found in Antarctic search.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- Scientists who conducted the most comprehensive survey to date of New Zealand's Antarctic waters were surprised by the size of some specimens found, including jellyfish with 12-foot tentacles and 2-foot-wide starfish. A 2,000-mile journey through the Ross Sea that ended Thursday has also potentially turned up several new species, including as many as eight new molluscs. It's "exciting when you come across a new species," said Chris Jones, a fisheries scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "All the fish people go nuts about that -- but you have to take it with a grain of salt." The finds must still be reviewed by experts to determine if they are in fact new, said Stu Hanchet, a fisheries scientist at New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. read more -cnn.com

Even the Britney biz is in recession

Britney Spears’ second release from the hospital was a gold mine for the paparazzi. Between tabloids, her recording career and her life in general, the revenue generated from all things Spears brought in up to $120 million in the past year. But now that she is staying home, is the business of Spears in a recession? “Since her father has her under his control, we certainly haven’t seen the number of photos that we used to see coming in of Britney,” X-17 co-owner Brandy Navarre told “Access Hollywood.” “The subject of the photo is just not as interesting as it once was, so the prices do go down.” read more -msnbc.com

Beatles sue to block 1962 tapes' release .

MIAMI - Lawyers for the Beatles sued Friday to prevent the distribution of unreleased recordings purportedly made during Ringo Starr's first performance with the group in 1962. The dispute between Apple Corps Ltd., the London company formed by the Beatles that helps guard their legacy, and Fuego Entertainment Inc. of Miami Lakes stems from recordings the Fab Four apparently made during a performance at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany. Eight unreleased tracks are said to be among the recordings, including Paul McCartney singing Hank Williams' "Lovesick Blues" and McCartney and John Lennon singing "Ask Me Why." read more -yahoo.com

In Touch reports that the pair caught a movie at Miami Beach’s Regal Cinema on Lincoln Road on March 16, but they’re taking things slowly, according to an insider who spoke to the magazine. read more msnbc.com

Torture death shocks Illinois town .

ALTON, Ill. - Banished to the basement, the 29-year-old mother with a childlike mind and another baby on the way had little more than a thin rug and a mattress to call her own on the chilly concrete floor. Dorothy Dixon ate what she could forage from the refrigerator upstairs, where prosecutors say housemates used her for target practice with BBs, burned her with a glue gun and doused her with scalding liquid that peeled away her skin. They torched what few clothes she had, authorities say, so she walked around naked. They often pummeled her with an aluminum bat or metal handle. ...read more yahoo.com

Russian journalist hanged, stabbed to death.

MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- A television journalist was found dead in a Moscow apartment Friday with a belt around his neck and numerous stab wounds -- a grisly murder that reinforces Russia's image as one of the most dangerous countries for reporters. Hours after the body of Ilyas Shurpayev was discovered, an executive in charge of the provincial state TV station in his home region of Dagestan was shot to death by unidentified men, and police were looking for links between the two killings. Toxic cheese scare rattles Italy.

ROME, Italy (AP) -- Makers of Italy's prized buffalo mozzarella took out full-page ads in Italian newspapers Friday assuring consumers the cheese was safe after high levels of dioxin were found in some samples of buffalo milk. The tainted products came from a few buffalo dairies in the southern Campania region, whose reputation as a top agricultural producer already has been tarnished by the months-old garbage crisis that has fueled fears of food contamination. Dioxin, a chemical environmental pollutant, can be hazardous even in small amounts. When it accumulates in the body, it can be linked to cancer, birth defects and organ failure. Over the past week, Italian authorities have searched dozens of buffalo dairies and seized milk samples for tests after higher-than-permitted levels of dioxin were discovered in products from 29 mozzarella makers, news reports said. Prosecutors in Naples have placed 109 people under investigation in connection with the probe, on suspicion of fraud and food poisoning, the ANSA news agency reported.  read more - cnn.com
