'10,000 B.C.' Roars to Top of Box Office With $35.7M Debut. |
LOS ANGELES - Movie-goers went hunting for their inner caveman as they sat in the dark for the prehistoric adventure "10,000 B.C.," which led the weekend box office with $35.7 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The Warner Bros. visual effects spectacle, which follows a band of people struggling to survive amid woolly mammoths, saber toothed tigers and human marauders, also took in $25.3 million in 20 overseas markets where it began rolling out Wednesday. Opening in second place was Disney's Martin Lawrence comedy "College Road Trip," which pulled in $14 million. NEW YORK, New York (CNN) -- The New York Police Department has released photos of a bicycle and a suspect in Thursday's Times Square recruitment center bombing.
The photo of the suspect, extracted from surveillance footage and released on Friday, shows someone riding a bicycle away from the scene shortly after the explosion. The second photo shows a metallic blue bicycle that was found abandoned in trash nearby.
Authorities are offering a $12,000 reward for information in that leads to an arrest in the case.
The explosion, which caused no injuries, went off about 3:45 a.m. Thursday at an Armed Forces Recruitment center in Times Square.

A MELBOURNE doctor and his wife have arrived home from holiday to find homicide detectives about to hold a press conference into their suspected deaths.
Police and the media had gathered at the home of William "Roy" Ostell, 63 and his wife Heather, 58, amid growing fears for their safety after their daughter reported them missing. So when they turned into the driveway on their Narre Warren property today in their "missing" 1975 Kombi, their daughter Angela, police and the press were stunned. It turns out the Ostells had decided to go for a Labour Day long weekend holiday break at Lakes Entrance, arranging for their dog and ponies to be cared for by a neighbour. Sotheby's in Asia will auction off a 72-carat flawless pear-shaped diamond that could fetch up to $15 million.
The diamond, from a southern African mine, is believed to be the third largest "pear-shaped" stone auctioned globally.
Sotheby's says it's a lot of bling for the buck.
"In terms of quality it can't get any better," said Quek Chin Yeow, Sotheby's deputy Asia chairman and its head of jewellery.
The mega-million dollar price tag is expected because of its size, symmetry and class rating, given only to the most brilliant of white D-color diamonds.

Lucy Brake, 27, of Henley-on-Thames, England, was waiting in her car when it was hit by a freight truck. The eight-and-a-half-months pregnant woman was forced to jump from her car, which was being dragged by the truck. In the process, she was caught by the open door and pushed under the car's wheels, according to the report. Barbarita Nunez was sorting clothes on Tuesday at the Veterans Thrift Store when she found a small box. Inside was an envelope of cash. Nunez said at first she thought the money was fake. But just in case, she gave it to her supervisor. The money turned out to belong to a woman who had recently died. Europe's rocket launches to space. |
CAYENNE, French Guiana (AP) -- A European rocket lifted off from French Guiana early Sunday on a mission to bring oxygen, food, water and equipment to the international space station.
The rocket will carry 21 tons of cargo to the space station, according Arianespace, the commercial arm of the 13-country European Space Agency.
It is the first of nine missions that Arianespace has arranged from this South American country to service the station over the next several years.

Scarlett Keeling was seen on the night she died at a bar with a group of local men, one of whom was identified as Samsung D'Souza, 29. D'Souza was arrested Sunday night for allegedly raping Keeling the night she died, senior police official Kishen Kumar told the Press Trust of India. | EVERETT, Wash. — A 10-year-old Everett area boy is listed in critical condition at Children's Hospital in Seattle after being buried in a sandbox by his playmates. The boy has been identified by his family as Cody Porter. His half brother, 30-year-old Joshua Quantrille, says Cody was playing with Quantrille's three sons and several other children on Saturday in the back yard of a home belonging to a family friend. There is a sandbox in the back yard, and Quantrille says his children told him Cody came up with the idea that they should bury him, head first, in the sand. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Highway and utility crews worked overtime Sunday to recover from the huge storm that buried Ohio
and other parts of the Midwest in snow and tore down power lines elsewhere.
More than 20 inches of snow fell from Friday through Saturday in Columbus, eclipsing the city's previous record of 15.3 inches set in February 1910,
the National Weather Service said. Elsewhere, 14 inches fell at Milan, Indiana. Up to a foot fell in parts of Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas on Friday.
Many churches in the Columbus area canceled Sunday services because roads were so slippery...
