WOODINVILLE, Wash. - Three seven-figure dream homes went up in flames early Monday in a Seattle suburb, apparently set by eco-terrorists who left a sign mocking the builders' claims that the 4,000-plus-square-foot houses were environmentally friendly The sign — a sheet marked with spray paint — bore the initials ELF, for Earth Liberation Front, a loose collection of radical environmentalists that has claimed responsibility for dozens of attacks since the 1990s. The sheriff's office estimated that Monday's pre-dawn fires did $7 million in damage to the "Street of Dreams," a row of unoccupied, furnished luxury model homes where tens of thousands of visitors last summer eyed the latest in high-end housing, interior design and landscaping. Spacecraft photographs Mars avalanche .

PASADENA, Calif. - A robotic spacecraft circling Mars has snapped the first image of a series of active avalanches near the planet's north pole, scientists said Monday. The image, taken last month, reveals at least four avalanches of fine ice and dust breaking off from a steep cliff and settling on the slope below. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A gunman wearing a jacket and tie wordlessly and randomly opened fire inside a Wendy's during the lunchtime rush Monday, killing a firefighter who'd gone back to fetch his child's toy and wounding five other diners. He then turned the gun on himself.

Nepal: 12 dead from U.N. copter crash .

KATHMANDU, Nepal (CNN) -- The death toll from a United Nations helicopter crash in Nepal has reached 12, the government said Tuesday. The United Nations Mission in Nepal helicopter was traveling from a camp for former Maoist rebels in east Nepal to the capital Kathmandu when it lost contact about 4 p.m. Monday (5:30 a.m. ET), the mission said. The chopper caught fire and crashed in a mountainous region near Bhawasa, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of Kathmandu. Six killed, including children, in Memphis shooting .

(CNN) -- Six people were killed, including two children , and another three children wounded in a shooting Monday in Memphis, Tennessee, authorities said. Memphis Fire Department spokeswoman Melanie Young said firefighters responded to a 911 call at a home at 6:11 p.m. Monday when the bodies and wounded children were found. The wounded children - a 7-year-old boy, a 10-month-old girl and a 4-year-old whose gender wasn't immediately known -- were transported to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center. Jersey child abuse probe finds suspect sites.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Debris excavated from the basement of a former children's home is being sent to laboratories for further examination, police said Monday. Forensic teams spent the weekend searching the building on Jersey, an island between England and France, after a fragment of a child's skull was found late in February. Cadaver dogs have found six "hits," locations where a body or body parts may have be buried, said police press officer Louise Nibbs. Doctor accused of hastening death for patient's organs.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, California (CNN) -- A respected California transplant doctor faces charges he hastened a comatose man's death to retrieve his organs -- a far-reaching case that could impact the nation's organ donation industry. Dr. Hootan Roozrokh, 34, is accused of ordering excessive doses of drugs to expedite the death of Ruben Navarro, a 25-year-old man who had suffered from a debilitating nerve disease since he was 9, according to the criminal complaint. Police: Texas teen, boyfriend spent month planning fatal attack.

EMORY, Texas (AP) -- A high school couple forced to break up spent about a month plotting to kill the girl's parents before her mother and two younger brothers were fatally shot and stabbed in a weekend ambush, according to records released Monday. Charlie James Wilkinson, who had been dating Penny and Terry Caffey's 16-year-old daughter, told police his girlfriend wanted her parents dead because they forbade their relationship, according to Rains County Sheriff Department investigators. Investigators are searching for these two men in connection with 11 robberies in the past six months in which thieves have targeted immigrants. By Kate Augusto, Globe Correspondent Police are looking for two men who have been flashing fake badges and impersonating police officers to rob illegal immigrants.
