Brazil hospital releases Naomi Campbell .

SAO PAULO, Brazil - Naomi Campbell was released Friday from the hospital where she underwent abdominal surgery. The 37-year-old British supermodel, a frequent visitor to Brazil, was admitted for an emergency operation Monday. "She recovered very well from her surgery," said Mirtes Bogea, a spokeswoman for the Sirio Libanes hospital in Sao Paulo. "Doctors signed her release and she left in the afternoon in a helicopter that someone sent to pick her up." Bogea declined to provide further details. Man in Critical Condition in Ricin Case .



LAS VEGAS — A man who stayed in a Las Vegas hotel room where ricin was discovered on Thursday has been hospitalized in critical condition since Feb. 14 with symptoms consistent with exposure to the deadly toxin, Las Vegas police said Friday. The man’s identity, age and hometown were being withheld on Friday as investigators tried to determine why ricin, as well as castor beans from which is it derived, were found in a room at an Extended Stay America hotel one mile west of the Las Vegas Strip. Deputy Chief Kathleen Suey said the man had been staying in the room where the ricin was found for an unknown length of time and was leasing the room when the substance was discovered. A man, said to be a relative or friend of the sick man, had gone into the room to retrieve the patient’s belongings when he found the vials of white powder and showed it to the hotel’s manager, Deputy Chief Suey said. read more - nytimes.com

45 die in Guatemala bus wreck.



GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (AP) -- An overcrowded bus plunged off a highway and rolled into a gully on Friday, killing 45 people and injuring 20 more, authorities said. The bus with an official capacity of 40 passengers was carrying some 65 passengers when it was crushed by the impact of the crash. Carlos Perez, a spokesman for the national firefighters company, said the death toll is likely to rise, given the serious condition of the injured. Man Charged In Manhattan Baby Sitter Rape.

NEW YORK - The NYPD has arrested Kevin Rios, 21, of Manhattan, and charged him with raping a 34-year-old woman at knifepoint inside of an East Harlem apartment building elevator, police said. He was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon. Police said the woman, who is from New Jersey, was on her way to work as a baby sitter. Woman Killed In East Village Market.

NEW YORK - One woman was dead and another was seriously injured Friday after a man stabbed them inside an East Village supermarket. The incident happened at Key Foods on East 4th Street and Avenue A at around 3:10 p.m. The slain woman, Tina Negron, 25, was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center after being stabbed in the torso. Five injured in Helicopter crash .

FOUR men critically injured in a helicopter crash in north west Sydney are being prepared to be airlifted to hospital. Police said five people were aboard the aircraft when it crashed in dense scrub near Arcadia at 12.55pm (AEDT). A fifth passenger is in a stable condition with minor injuries, a NSW Ambulance Service spokesman said. Helicopters will transport the seriously injured, who are all aged in their thirties, to Westmead and Liverpool hospitals. A man with spinal and back injuries will be taken to Liverpool hospital in a serious condition. A second man will be taken to Westmead hospital with facial and pelvic injuries. He is in a serious condition. A third man will be taken to Westmead hospital with shoulder injuries. He is in a serious condition.
