Review: 'Dark Knight' a stunning film .
(CNN) -- According to a Russian proverb, God makes the priests. Jesters come from the devil. You won't have any trouble believing that aphorism when you see Heath Ledger's mesmerizing performance as the Joker in "The Dark Knight," Christopher Nolan's hotly anticipated and often brilliantly executed follow-up to "Batman Begins." His face caked in cracked white greasepaint, his smile a grotesque red lipstick scar, kohl rimming his eyes, the Joker is a cruel kind of clown, the kind that is only interested in the last laugh. Slouched in his purple suit, Ledger gives him a lopsided shuffle, a permanently craning neck and an insinuating, deceptively neighborly voice. But there's something reptilian about the way his tongue flicks through his pursed lips like a pickpocket. He's hungry for trouble, a maniac for mayhem -- and in Gotham City, where crime is still running wild, he can make himself right at home.

8-foot snake found in washing machine in Maine.
GORHAM, Maine—A Gorham woman got the shock of her life when she found an 8-foot snake mixed in with clothes in her washing machine. The snake, identified as a reticulated python, somehow got into the water pipes of Mara Ranger's 1800s-era farmhouse and slithered into the machine. After Ranger took her blue jeans out of the machine Wednesday, she reached back into the load and felt something move. "I jumped back and all of sudden its head starts coming out of the washing machine and it looked huge," Ranger told WMTW-TV. Ranger quickly closed the lid and called police and an animal control officer, but they didn't want anything to do with the serpent.

Mrs Lynch, 33, says an arc from the lightning struck her on her left thumb, before passing up her arm, across her back and out the other arm. Arcs are electric currents that flow through the air, similar to lightning itself.

Jellyfish swarms descend on Côte d'Azur .
More than 500 people have been stung by un-naturally large swarms of jellyfish that have invaded France's Côte d'Azur.
Despite the use of protective anti-jellyfish nets, hundreds of thousands of the the animals, whose population is thriving thanks to overfishing and global warming, have made it into swimming areas and are washing up onto Riviera beaches. Stricken bathers from Cannes to Antibes, incuding Villeneuve-Loubet and Cagnes-sur-mer, have been treated for painful burns caused by their stingers. Monaco and Nice have so far been spared, although experts say much of the coast could be hit this year given the size of shoals observed.

Behind the Scenes: James Brown auction stirs up memories .
NEW YORK (CNN) -- He was the hardest working man in show business, but judging from his possessions up for auction Thursday at Christie's in New York, James Brown also knew how to have a really good time. The sale is expected to net nearly $2 million. The auction was contested by two of Brown's former business managers, but earlier this week a state of appeals judge in South Carolina ruled that the sale could proceed. Man finds knife in Subway sandwich, sues.
NEW YORK - A New York man claimed in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday that he found a knife with a 7-inch blade baked into the bread of his foot-long "Cold Cut Trio" Subway sandwich. John Agnesini, 26, a magazine designer, said he had already taken a few bites from the sandwich in late June when he spotted the knife jutting out from the bread's crust. The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan state court, seeks $1 million. "If I didn't look at it, I don't know what would have happened," said Agnesini. "That's the last thing you think about a sandwich you eat all the time."
